Stop Hitting the Snooze Button
Have you found yourself hitting the snooze button in an attempt to just get five more minutes of sleep in hopes that you'll feel better when your alarm goes off again? As counterintuitive as it may seem initially, hitting the snooze button will actually leave you more tired than before. It trains your brain to associate certain activities done in a specific order with preparing to sleep and helps you get there more effectively. Avoid sources of blue light for a couple hours before going to bed. Disconnecting from your phone before bed will help you get better quality sleep. The same goes for the TV and your computer screens. Enjoy relaxing activities instead. Your routine might look something like reading a book, doing some gentle bedtime stretches, washing your face, brushing your teeth, putting pajamas on, and getting into bed.
Create a Healthy Sleeping Environment
The environment you sleep in is also an important factor in how well you rest. Create a healthy sleep environment that is dark, cool, and quiet. The ideal temperature for sleeping will change somewhat from person to person, but in general it's best to keep the room between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit. If noise is a problem, try running a fan or some other form of white noise. Blackout curtains or blankets over windows can help keep out excess light that might prevent you from sleeping soundly.
We live in a culture that seems to worship being overbooked and working until you drop. This lifestyle often leads to poor sleep and is likely to cause you to wake up feeling tired every morning. Take measures to combat exhaustion by refusing to hit the snooze button, work on establishing a better sleep routine, and creating a healthier sleeping environment.
