How to Stop Waking Up in Pain

There is nothing worse than waking up on a busy day and being in pain. Your body should support you through all of your tasks, not shut down from the start. However, you might have some habits that are contributing to your daily pain. Take the time to reassess how your lifestyle is contributing to your physical well-being.

Sleep in a Different Position

Believe it or not, how you’re sleeping could be contributing to your morning pain. You remain in the same position for several hours while you sleep. Because of this, you want to make sure your sleeping position is healthy on your spine and other joints. If you’re a usual stomach sleeper, this could explain why you wake up in pain. Sleeping on your stomach is hard on your spine. Instead, try sleeping on your back with a pillow under your knees. This allows your spine to stay in a neutral position while you sleep. If that’s too uncomfortable for you, you can try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees.

Get a New Mattress

Your mattress is another important factor in your sleep quality. Your mattress should support your body while you sleep. If you find that your mattress is saggy or lumpy in parts, or you notice other signs of a worn mattress, it’s time to replace it. As a general rule, you should replace your mattress every 6-8 years. Your mattress should be helping you get a good night’s sleep, not prohibiting it. This is also a great opportunity to invest in a type of mattress that will actively help prevent morning pain. Air mattresses offer relief from bedsores so you can sleep more comfortably. Memory foam is also a popular option. Whatever you choose, having a good quality mattress is a key in waking up without pain.

Try Some Yoga

What you do during the day is just as much of a factor in living without pain as what you do at night. Yoga is a great, low-impact method of moving your body that can help you ease pain. During yoga, you stretch and move your body into different positions that can alleviate pressure on your spine and joints. Starting every day with yoga can be a great way to slowly loosen up the muscles of the body and start the day energized.

Waking up with pain can make your whole day feel over before it begins. Pain medication is a great short-term solution, but it’s better to address the problem at its root. Make some adjustments to your lifestyle to discover why you might wake up with pain.
