Throughout your career it is important to prioritize your health. Physical, mental, and emotional health are three important dimensions for your overall happiness and well-being, regardless of what career you’re in. Take care of yourself by keeping these habits at your workplace!
Develop Mechanisms for Dealing with Stress
About one third of working individuals admit to feeling stressed during the workday. Stress can lead to a variety of mental and physical health issues. Long-term chronic stress can lead to anxiety, depression, heart disease, weight gain, sleep problems, and so much more. Stress management, however, will go a long way in helping you create a happier and healthier life. Develop strategies that will allow you to recenter when feeling stressed. Work with a therapist to help identify reasons for stress and what you can do to avoid them. If work continues to give you high levels of stress, consider talking with your supervisor to reduce work demands.
Wear Protective Equipment
Personal protective equipment, or PPE, protects any user against physical harm of hazards. As an individual it is important to wear PPE at work, but equipment doesn’t just apply to hazardous industries like manufacturing and mining. Protective equipment can apply to any job. High noise levels can be especially damaging to your hearing. Millions of workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels every year. Protective eye equipment should be worn in a factory and at a desk. The UV light that comes from computers can be damaging after long exposure. Protective equipment doesn’t just protect your company from liabilities, it protects your immediate and long-term health.
Stretch Your Legs
Whether you have a desk job or a highly physical job, it is important to stretch your body while at work. During the workday, your body does a lot of repetitive motions, strengthening some muscles and weakening others. Failure to stretch all parts of the body can lead to muscle tension and injuries. Stretching at work will increase your blood supply and nutrients to your muscles. This will reduce the fatigue you feel during the workday. Stretching will also improve your posture, muscle coordination and balance. Avoid staying in place all day by taking time to stretch your legs.
Throughout your career you will overcome many challenges and obstacles. But your immediate and long-term health is crucial for living a happy life, and should always be a high priority. Avoid hurting your health during your career by making a conscious effort to protect yourself.
