How to Avoid Getting Sick From What You Eat

Food is one of the most essential parts of life. What we eat can fuel us, heal us, and help us. But it can also hinder us and make us sick if we don’t eat or prepare it correctly. Make sure you’re fulfilling your body’s most basic needs in a healthy and safe way.

Prepare it Properly

If food isn’t prepared properly, it can go from healthy to harmful very quickly. The most important example of this is meat and animal products. If meat isn’t cooked to a specific internal temperature, it can cause diseases like salmonella or E. coli. Buying a meat thermometer is a great option to be extra careful, but there are other ways to ensure your meat is fully cooked. With chicken, for example, when you cut the thickest portion of the meat, the juices should run completely clear. Any hint of pink, and you’ve got more cooking to do!

Get Your Food From Safe Sources

You can prepare food as safely as possible once it’s in your kitchen, but you also need to make sure you get it from a safe source. There are processes in place to prevent hazards in food production. Food distribution companies have to comply with a set of strict regulations to ensure the food you receive is safe. But there are important steps you can take to ensure the safety of your food, as well. Check the expiration dates on food when you’re shopping, and try to purchase the freshest items.

Store Your Food Safely

Different foods require different environments to be stored safely. Make sure you put meat and animal products in the refrigerator as soon as possible after buying them. If they’re left out at room temperature for any longer than a few hours, they’ve gone bad. If you’re planning on waiting more than 1-2 days for that chicken dinner, store your meat in the freezer instead. Check online for how long certain foods are safe to eat before they should be thrown away or replaced. When in doubt, freeze it! Raw chicken is good in the freezer for up to 9 months.

Eating healthy food is essential to a long, happy life. It’s equally important, however, to make sure the food you eat is prepared and stored safely. Because food is the most important way you keep yourself healthy, make sure you’re consuming it in a way that will fuel you, not make you sick.
