Carbs Your Body Needs to Stay Healthy

Food is essential to keep your body functioning. The most essential nutrients that come from food are the macronutrients which are proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Carbohydrates are important because your body breaks them down to use them for energy. Main sources of carbohydrates that keep you healthy are starch, fiber, and naturally occurring sugar.

Starch

Carbohydrates are your body’s preference to utilize as energy. Your body utilizes carbohydrates for quick energy and stores it away for later. Energy from carbohydrates is important for your brain, heart, kidneys, and your nervous system. Starches are an important source of carbohydrate. These are also called complex carbohydrates. Sources of starches, or complex cars, are found in starchy vegetables like potatoes and whole grains. Starchy foods also include vitamins and minerals which help your body function at its best.

Fiber

Fiber is a carbohydrate that is not digested by the body, so it doesn’t contribute to your energy intake. Fiber helps to slow the digestion of other carbohydrates which regulates your blood sugars. Fiber is also important in keeping you feeling fuller for longer and helps to keep your intestines healthy. There are two kinds of fiber, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber dissolves in water and helps regulate blood sugar and lower your cholesterol. Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in water but helps to bulk up your stool and prevent digestive issues or issues with your intestines, like hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids can cause unpleasant symptoms that eating more fiber prevents.

Naturally Occurring Sugar

There is a difference between added sugars and naturally occurring sugars. Added sugars don’t provide benefits nutritionally other than calories, while naturally occurring sugars, such as fructose and lactose, are in foods that are more nutritionally dense. For example, fruits contain fructose, which the body uses for energy, and contains fiber, vitamins and minerals. You don’t need to consume added sugars, even though they are delicious. Added sugars such as table sugar can spike your blood sugar and too much can lead to poor health. Read labels so that you can be mindful of added sugars and eat them moderately.

Your body needs nutrients so it can function, and you can feel your best. Carbohydrates are an important nutrient because your body utilizes energy. Carbohydrates aren’t simply good for energy, but also for supplying other essential vitamins and minerals that ensure your body is running efficiently.
